Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is an essential part of the support provided to students at New River College (NRC).

As a school, we have achieved the Quality in Careers Standard.

For students

We will support you throughout your time here to learn the new skills to be able to move forward. Year after year, more and more of our school leavers successfully move on to further education, apprenticeships/traineeships or employment with training. We have a high expectation that our students (you) will do well.

Careers information and guidance from qualified advisers with good labour market knowledge.
Impartial and unbiased information on the qualification and career paths that suit your interests and skills.

Support to enhance the key skills employers are looking for and life skills.
Help with research, applying and preparing for interviews.

The effort you put into your learning and future planning will support your success. This includes:

attending school and classes. Good attendance sets you up for a strong future!
participating in Alternative Curriculum activities and considering work-experience placements as these will add to your CV and help you acquire new employability skills
engaging in constructive discussions with our careers lead, careers advisers, tutors, employers and staff about your learning, future aims and progress
taking part in events we organise so that you can learn new skills, meet employers who want to invest in you, and investigate all options to choose a pathway that suits you. It is important that you attend open events at colleges offering courses that are of interest to you so you can compare them and make the right choices for you
attending careers fairs/apprenticeship/job fairs to explore your options
offering feedback and ideas on how we can improve our careers programme.

For parents

Our programme of Alternative Curriculum and Careers Education helps our young people prepare for adult life, and this starts as soon as they arrive at New River College. Each student has access to our careers advisers. Through meetings with our qualified career team, employers, visiting speakers, off-site visits, work experience and RSHE lessons, students are supported to explore possible avenues they may take in the future so they can have the best start in life. All students from Years 7 to 11 take part in an annual Career Week, which takes place in January each year.

We foster close relationships with a number of local employers and further education providers to offer an employability-related Alternative Curriculum across all year groups.

Our professionally trained career advisers provide:

one-to-one support on and off-site
assistance with application forms
help to prepare for interviews
independent careers guidance to encourage students to consider all the options available to them at each transition stage.

Careers Start is a website created to help 11- to 24-year olds discover and explore careers they will love.
