NRC Primary
Our school supports children from Islington primary schools with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs who have been permanently excluded, allocated a place through SEN consultation or via the Securing Education Board on a short-term placement. A high number of our pupils also have an additional diagnosis of autism and/or ADHD. We work with pupils whose special educational needs mean that accessing mainstream provision is too difficult for them and they require a higher level of support. We have small classrooms of up to six pupils, with a high staff-to-pupil ratio, ensuring that children are given the correct support when needed across the school day.
Using a trauma-informed approach, our staff work closely with pupils and families to develop positive relationships in order to remove barriers to learning and personal development. We believe that all behaviour is communication, and we base our approach on three core elements: celebration, restoration and de-escalation.
At NRC Primary, we offer a bespoke curriculum that supports children by identifying gaps in their learning and understanding. Our pupils also have opportunities to take part in activities such as swimming, music therapy and interventions led in partnership with the Educational Psychology service and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
Using a person-centred approach, we work with pupils and their families towards a transition to a suitable future school placement. In the past, we have successfully reintegrated many students into mainstream provisions as well as specialist schools.
In the future, we hope to further develop our trauma-informed approach, supporting children and their families to overcome the barriers to education and helping them make progress with their personal development. We are passionate about building strong and positive relationships with the families who join our school and pride ourselves on supporting them to make progress during their time with us.
